9/10 Capstone Project - Special Education (Personal Story + Facts)

Since I covered a lot of different sub-topics of special education towards educators I wanted to switch things up differently. I wanted to share my experience as a special ed student and explain my backstory of how I ended up here. Starting off I was introduced to special education when I was very young in kindergarten. During the time of taking special education classes, I didn’t understand why I was taken outta of my regular classes in the middle of the day. My original thought was that I was getting a reward for being a good student.

My experience started off with a knock on the classroom door and a special educator would call out my name and I followed her to an empty room which was covered in blankets. The covering of blankets is the meaning that other students are in the room but separate with their special ed teachers. Her introduction of being a special ed teacher misguided me that she’s very special and only a handful would experienced this. Little did I know that it was special for those who had to learn curves and difficulties.

During my several year duration, I did various activities that I had no idea that would’ve helped me into society. Activities such learning how to tie my shoes, verbally speaking with other people, learning how to walk normally while reading and writing proficiently. Other methods would include a creative or group based program to help students like me improve academically quick in a short time period.

I didn’t really understand the meaning of special education until the 7th grade where my special education teacher took me outta the class one day and asked me if I needed additional help with anything. I finally asked her the purpose of going outside a class into an empty part of the building and doing various activities.

She told me that this was a part of being prepared in high school whereas a lot of these skills would come into use. In my opinion, I was neutral with the program for a few reasons. One main reason was becoming isolated. The idea of someone taking you away from a civilized class for a while and coming back can still make you fall behind of your class. This approach would’ve been better if this was during the student free time. Something like an after-school program or during a lunch break. Just the idea of doing this while class was in session does not only disconnect you from the rest of your classmates, but gossip goes around as to what other students think of you.

My second reason would be the curriculum. I can understand that every individual student would have their own learning program, but the fact that I remembered a lot of my activities I can say that it was a success. So even if special educators are having a hard time dealing with students like me, they'll be amazed how much support they've given me and seeing the improvement I've made since special education. I just wish that there was a way to show the performance before and after special education to see the progression thet special education teachers did to their students.
