1/10 Capstone Project - Introduction of Special Education
Every day many people between the age groups of preschoolers up to adults are going to schools and universities in exchange for learning public education. The purpose of receiving an education is to provide those useful necessities that'll contribute them to society. Without these proper skills, then these group of people would be excluded from the pack. Unfortunately in the past several decades younger age groups tends to have more difficulty in learning and falling behind in their academics. Especially those who have a disability and disadvantage that affects their ability to learn properly. However, with the NCLB, No Child Left Behind act taking place, this would require an entirely different approach to assist handicapped students. This was one of the few main reasons that Special Education exist.
To give a bit of a backstory, The start of Special Education first took place back into the beginning of the 19th century. Special Education was designed by schools who was located in low urban districts to help students gaining various skills which correspond to their general education. During the time special education was very beneficial for students in public schools, until later in that century were more kids with disabilities started to appear. With the epidemic rise of SWD, students with disabilities, educators have now required a lot more attention to each individual student.
Those with learning disabilities are treated at a disadvantage and are falling behind in education. At that time a big change in the education system of Brown vs Board of Education case was a success in having African Americans having equivalent education and opportunities with other races. This change was an opportunity for parents with disabled children to also have the chance of fighting for equal opportunities in education. From there, a variety of changes from ESEA, Elementary and Secondary Education Act, decided to help fund schools with money in order to assist those who're having a learning disability.
After everything, we're assuming that education for SWD got better. The answer is no, and the reason behind this is that not every child with disabilities is receiving the right education. Those who are teaching disadvantaged students are Special Educators. Special Educators, Special ed Teacher for short, are responsible for assisting every student to get back on track into their learning and making an insane amount of progress. While this may seem easy to a lot of people it turns out to be an extremely time-consuming task. In this ten-part blog series I'll be going over the roles of special ed teachers while explaining along the way their struggles, their learning process, and responsibilities that they're dealing with. In addition, we're providing facts and solutions in making their teaching job more beneficial for them self and their students.
