2/10 Capstone Project - More into Special Educator role and responsibilities
Now in order to understand more about special educators and their issues we need to be in their footsteps. Before going on the path of being a special educator there is one big part that the majority leave out or ignore. This would be to evaluate them-self by asking various questions in the field. Questions such as Am I experienced enough of handling an entire class of disabled children by myself? Or do I have enough patience to work with each individual throughout the school years in improving their academics? A lot of people don't seem to ask themselves questions before going 100% into this career path and ended up going through this phase of regret and uncertainly. The best reasoning for this is because people don't see the value of reviewing their choices and they would rather just go for it based on their interest. If people were to research and ask themselves questions about the field and responsibilities beforehand then this would save potential careers and futures of others.
After evaluating, those who have chosen their path to go into special education will have to do a few things. The first thing is the requirements of being a special educator. The minimum requirements are a bachelors degree, and having a teaching certificate. Once a special educator have been able to get these requirements, then there are able to teach students with disabilities. However, the real challenge begins on their journey.
Upon the school's arrival, their role as a special educator is to assist each student at their own pace in order to learn skillsets. Special education teachers work just as regular school teachers yearly, however, they have more responsibilities in updating each students progression towards administrators and parents. Their role also requires a lot of time, and patience which is a really long process.
After getting the requirements and job a lot of people in the special educator field don't remain for that long. This may be how the system treats special education or various reasoning behind the high percentage of special educators leaving in a short time span of a few years. In the next several of these blog post, I'll be going over the main issues of why special educators leave their jobs and way they can improve themselves.
