The Common School Reflection/Summary
The first section of "The Story of American Public Education" discusses how education was created and the challenges it was faced. Some of the challenges were race, the condition of schools, religion and equal treatment. What I found interesting in the first section is that families didn't see any importance towards education in the 18th century, complained toward prices and other issues. As I soon learned that common school is somewhat similar to ours today, that we are here to know each other in a certain way and gain the basic common knowledge.
My reaction toward this first section wasn't that exciting, but wasn't bored. I was interested in how african americans were able to get the right to receive proper education, I was actually shocked to find out about the Brown vs Education case. I have heard of this case several times when I was young, but I never understood the true meaning of this case. After reading it I was quite satisfy to finally found out the answer to something that's been on my mind whenever I hear the term.
Another interesting thing about this section is Horace Mann care and contribution in making schools more relaxable and less stressful. The fact that he visited thousands of school to find issues and help resolved it tells me that he needs to be talked about in education lectures and have some sort of appreciation for making an impact in our current time today.
How this section can help with education is that these people can learn from their mistakes and use it to improve themselves and the schools to become a fun and an important establishment to learn.
