Book Club 1 Summary & Review
The book club group I'm participating in are reading The Death And Life of The Great American School System. The author of this book is Diane Ravitch. Her book introduces the way of how education is supposed to be led by educators and those who have experience in education contributing to improving schools across the nation. She believed that school educators should value the school curriculum in multiple subjects. However, this was ignored due to entrepreneurs, businessmen & those with upper power controlling the education of schools without any experience towards education.
In her first two chapters, Ravitch mentioned some important key features of education that should promote students to improve better and efficiently. The first thing that was discussed was the "No Child Left Behind Act". The meaning behind this is that money is given towards poor students in exchange for them to improve academically in education. Reformers were promising to help those who are struggling and help them from failing schools and ending the difference of how poor and rich are being treated. Unfortunately, the reformers didn't live up to their promise, and this disappointed the author in believing in businesses reformers of contributing in making school education improve.
Another main discussion was the author's interest in change. Ravitch's impact on the school curriculum contributed to improving the state of California university in addressing important topics in certain subjects. Thanks to Ravitch, students would require studying a few years of world history, other relatable histories which still remains in today's time. In addition, the author hates the idea of account and choice as a solution for education since these two points are based on a market of statistics.
She concluded in her first chapter that the reforms are corrupted, goes more in-depth in her novel how the school system has gone in the wrong direction, explained if there's any time left the system from falling apart.
In her second chapter, Ravitch discusses the Bush administration and goes more in-depth toward school teachings. For the Bush administration, they had some ideas of allowing every state around the US to form their own curriculum on what to teach students. The biggest issue allowing this freedom to form their own teachings is that they don't know what to teach the students. This resulted in the majority of the states providing inadequate and inconsistent teaching format which is too basic for students.
Another issue related to what to teach students is educators and teachers trying to figure out students standards and creating a test for themselves. This was considered difficult for educators since they're left isolated without the help from those in charge to lead educators the proper way to teach their students. This happened because of ANAR, A Nation At Risk, who suggested the idea to allow states to create their own teaching format.
The other main discussion is the impact of SAT scores which was lowered due to students taking more elective courses than general education. Another reason for test score decreasing is the student curriculum and the lower requirement for all school to get the essential goals. This resulted in requirements increasing, adding more school day and providing teachers who teach their students well with a bonus raise.
